What Causes Low Fever, Sore Throat, Jaw Pain And Swollen Lymph Nodes?

default
Posted on Thu, 3 Sep 2015
Question: Wondering what I have? Symptoms started 10 weeks ago. Flu like with low fever, sore throat, mouth and jaw pain, fatigue and swollen lymph nodes, muscle soreness. Blood test showed viral infection not bacterial at 1 week in. Lymph nodes are less swollen and feel hot for last 2 weeks and now just hurt. Fatigue is finally getting better but last week both ears have pressure and hurt with no infection. No rashes. Have numbness in my face, neck and upper chest starting last week and some general weakness. Fatigue is similar to how i felt when i had mono as a teen. Waiting on test results.

Brief Answer:
Tests needed explained below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your query and understand your concerns.

Flu-like symptoms lasting that long surely should be evaluated further mainly by tests to properly diagnose your condition.

In my opinion, one possible explanation of your concerns could be autoimmune diseases such Lupus, Skogren's, etc.
Autoantibodies such ANA, XXXXXXX should be measured to evaluate this possibility.

Chronic infections such endocarditis should be evaluated as another possible cause of your symptoms.

Blood cultures and ECG needed to evaluate this possibility.

Viral testing about EBV ( Epstein-Barr ), HIV ( Human immunodeficiency virus) and CMV ( cytomegalovirus ) needed also to evaluate chronic viral infection as a possible explanation of your symptoms.

Infection degree markers such CRP ( C-reactive protein ) and procalcitonin should be measured too.

These issues should be discussed with your treating Doctor.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Take care.

I just called and asked about my blood work during my first week of symptoms. Rapid strep came back neg and blood work showed no infection viral or bacterial. I thought i had strep which is why i went to dr in first place. Also, i had nausea sometimes with vomiting starting mid nov on and off for a few weeks. Last time in feb. Feel awful today.Have almost no energy and have to take breaks between activities. On this last fri blood was drawn for tests and my dr said the only thing she could see wrong with me is slighltly swollen lymph nodes. I will ask her about autoimmune testing. Thank you for your answer.

Brief Answer:
Hypothyroidism could be related to autoimmune diseases.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.

Hypothyroidism could be related to autoimmune disease ( Hashimoto's eg.) so, autoimmune diseases could explain your symptoms.

Besides TSH, triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) levels should be measured to assess properly thyroid gland function, as well as thyroid gland ultrasound.

Hope I helped you. Best regards.
