What Causes Low Libido Post Testosterone Replacement Therapy?

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Jun 2016
Question: In early February I went off Testosterone Replacement Therapy.

Since that time I have experienced no sex drive whatsoever, no morning erections and no sex with my wife of 46 yrs. I have never gone this long not having sex with my wife. While on Testosterone, everything was great!

Is this normal??

Brief Answer:
Possible

Detailed Answer:
If you used Testosterone for a number of years it tens to shut down the body's natural testosterone production through a complex mechanism.

So if you need to be sure if your low sexual function is a result of low testosterone levels then the levels will need to be checked.

Prefer to do a morning test.

When I see someone like you in my practice, I typically order the following blood tests in addition to a detailed physical examination:

CBC (Complete Blood Count, also known as Hemogram; includes Hemoglobin, WBC and Platelet counts)
Electrolytes (Sodium and Potassium in particular)
HbA1c (Glycosylated Hemoglobin = your 3 month glucose average)
Liver function tests (SGOT , SGPT, Albumin, Bilirubin, Alkaline Phosphatase)
Kidney function tests (BUN, Creatinine)
TSH
Total Testosterone
Prolactin
FSH
LH
25 hydroxy Vitamin D

None of these tests require any fasting and can be done at any time of the day.

You will be best served by seeing an endocrinologist in-person who will examine your testicles, besides a general physical assessment
