Brief Answer:
Likely to be a viral infection

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through the details and understand your concern. Most often such symptoms are due to viral infections and antibiotics are ineffective in such cases. Irrespective of treatment it usually spontaneously resolves in 5-7 days. Children often suffer from viral infections that may manifest with fever. If your child is otherwise active and playful, I would not be concerned. If not, it would be a good idea to visit a doctor and to get the child evaluated.

If your child has fever with temperature more than 100°F, you need to give acetaminophen (Tylenol) to it bring down. Advil (ibuprofen) is more effective and can be given as an alternative. But Advil has the side effect of causing gastritis. Otherwise these two medicines should take care of the low back pain as well. It could be due to improper sleep posture though. The viral infection could also be associated with malaise giving rise to such symptoms. Wait and observe. If it does not resolve you can get an opinion from your doctor.

Let me know if I could help further.

Please note that he no longer has fever and his fever has been controlled 2-3 days ago. You mentioned viral infection but I believe that had been addressed.

As of now my main concern is about the new symptom of pain in the lower right back - under the rib pain. What body part could be involved here? I'm not clear on what to do from your email since the fever is already addressed by these meds.

Giving more of the same medication is of concern; Tylenol, Advil, and Motrin.... could they be the cause of this pain? We gave him these meds as directed and alternated from one to the other.

Please clarify what to do for this pain and clarify gastritis?

thanks,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Could be due to muscle spasm.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back and for clarifying.

It is good to know that the fever has been controlled. Tylenol is unlikely to lead to such a problem. If Advil or Motrin need not be continued. The pain due to gastritis is usually located in upper central abdomen (just below the breast bone). In case of such a pain giving Lanzol junior (lansoprazole) once daily provides relief.

Ideally a clinical examination is needed to confirm the location of the ongoing pain. Going by the description, the pain seems to be due to spasm of back muscles. If that is the case, hot compress should provide relief. Tylenol can be given if needed (for pain).
