What Causes Lower Left Quadrant Pain?

Question: Hi - I have a question on lower left quadrant pain - I have previously been diagnosed with IBS - a condition which has come under question, however after recently at my doctors advice I was subjected to synthetic compounded Thyroxine (T4) which caused an increase in symptoms. I usually take a natural form, seeing that I am so sensitive. It feels like burning, or something being squeezed - a very uncomfortable feeling. I have had advice from a gastroenterologist who feels it is too early to redo a colonoscopy. I have been advised to wait until XXXXXXX next year before proceeding with anything further - I am not happy about this and concerned it should not be ignored that long.
Its like a raw and burning feeling pretty much over the entire lower part of the large intestine (colon) - I feel weak and tired sometimes and sometimes warm and clammy. (not sure if this is connected)
I am concerned that this should not wait - that I should be perhaps following another path or something to that effect in getting it resolved.

Brief Answer:
CT scan

Hi there,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I am Dr.Barani and I am pleased to assist you.
Some of the common causes of left lower quadrant pain in a female individual are diverticulitis, urinary tract infection and pelvic inflammatory disease.
Colonoscopy alone will not help. Moreover if it is due to diverticulitis, colonoscopy should not be done.
CT scan is the ideal investigation to be done in these circumstances.
You can discuss with you doctor about this option.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

Thanks for the answer but I have a question for you - surely Diverticulitis would be picked up on colonoscopy ? I had one in May last year which is one of the reasons doctors are not going to rush into one again now - however my symptoms are definitely not quite right.
I have taken on board what you and the other DR have both said however and I was feeling 100% well with none of these issues until fairly recently (2014) when this began flaring up. (obviously other than my IBS which has been an ongoing thing which I manage recently well) Nothing untoward other than a worsening case of what feels like inflammation highlighted by my recent case of taking the synthetic T4.

Brief Answer:
Colonoscopy not needed as it was only recently done
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
If the last colonoscopy was done only as late as May and if no diverticula was found then, it is less likely that the pain is due to diverticulitis unless the diverticula were missed during the last colonoscopy.
The reason why doctors do not want a colonoscopy is it was done only 5 months ago. So there is no hurry to do it.
But a CT scan may be done to find the cause for left lower abdominal pain.
Yes , recent inflammation causing colitis involving the left colon is one possibility.
But synthetic T4 causing the inflammation of the left colon is unlikely.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

Thanks - the colonoscopy was done almost a year and a half ago. That is still fairly recent. It was my GP who felt that it should be looked at again, saying that it may be a symptom rather than the medication being the cause of the bleed. I did already have a CT scan and no diverticulitis showed up on that one.
Brief Answer:
Colonoscopy if there is recurrent bleeding
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the additional information.
You can go for early colonoscopy only if there is recurrent/persistent bleed.
Otherwise you can wait as your gastroenterologist has suggested.

Thanks. This is the upshot of it for me. Will keep a close eye on it for the moment but suspect it was a case of a case of chemical sensitivity as I thought was the case, complicating and stirring up the IBS. Needless to say that medication was stopped as soon as I realised it was causing me problems. Working with the gastro and hopefully this will either resolve itself or be resolved with earlier colonoscopy as you say.
