Posted on Sat, 23 Sep 2017
Question: Hello

My doctor said I have molluscom after finding bumps on my leg, arm and pubic area. He sprayed nitrogen on them last week and he did a second round of nitrogen today. The surrounding skin around the bumps is slightly swollen due to the spray.

1. What can I do to reduce the swelling?
2. How long will the swelling last?
3. How many more rounds of nitrogen would I need?
4. The bumps have become red and some of the tops have been filled with puss. Is this normal in the healing process?
5. When will they fully heal and stop becoming contagious?

I am Dr. Kakkar (dermatologist). I have gone through your query and I have noted your concern.

Some redness and swelling is expected after liquid nitrogen spray as part of tissue injury and inflammation. You may use a topical antibiotic e.g 2% mupirocin ointment or 2%fusidic acild ointment, twice daily. Pus formation suggests that perhaps there is bacerial superinfection. For that too the topical antibiotic ointment would help.

Usually 1 or 2 sessions of liquid nitrogen treatment are enough. After treatment, molluscum lesion would blister in next 1-2 days, later the blister settles down to form a scab and then it falls off. This time course takes about a week or so.

Existing molluscum lesions are the only source of infection therefore treating all the visible lesions usually prevents them from spreading further.

so the existing lesion that had been already treated by nitrogen is not contagious? the scab is not contagious? When will it fully heal so that I may resume normal sexual activity ?

Brief Answer:
Molluscum contagiosum

Detailed Answer:
hello.

yes, a treated lesion becomes non infectious as soon as it is frozen with liquid nitrogen. Subsequently it would blister/ scab and fall off in about 10-14 days which is when you can resume your sexual activity.

Thank you Dr Kakkar for your answers. I've attached some pictures of my pubic area. My doctor did two rounds of nitrogen 1 week apart from each other. Right now it's been 4 days since the last round and he said he might do a third round of nitrogen on Thursday as I am leaving on a 2 week vacation on Friday.

As you can see, scabs have formed and some have fallen out. But wherever the lesion previously was you can still see a bump with a white head. Is this normal? Wasn't the bump supposed to disappear? Is a third round of nitrogen necessary ?

Brief Answer:
Molluscum Contagiosum

Detailed Answer:
Thank you. I have viewed the Images.

I think that most of the lesions are drying up and resolving. Yes, I can see a little white bump at one site of healed lesion which is most probably a folliculitis rather than molluscum contagiosum. Perhaps your doctor wants to see if there are any remaining lesions or new lesions of molluscum contagiosum on which he might do another treatment. I suggest you to use an antibacterial ointment e.g neosporin ointment, twice daily, at the treated sites till the scabs fall off.

Sorry for the many questions Dr. Kakkar. The scabs of the molluscum treatment are falling off. Wherever the lesions were, there is still a red bump. Is this normal ?

Will Sea water (salt water) affect the treated area in any way? I was planning to go to the beach in a few days.

Note: They have been treated twice already with liquid nitrogen. Each treatment 1 week apart from each other starting Aug 25.

Brief Answer:
Molluscum contagiosum

Detailed Answer:
hi

Fine. I think the red bumps are just resolving/ dead molluscum lesions. You can continue with the topical antibacterial ointment. I don't think there would be any issue with going to the beach.
