What Causes Memory Loss When Diagnosed With Encephalomalacia?

default
Posted on Tue, 27 Oct 2015
Question: Have a major stroke one year ago. Have been having memory loss and unable to speak well and it is getting worse. Had MRI and it read encephalomalacia involving left parietal lobe in a partial left MCA distribution. Generalizes cerebral and cerebellar volume loss. Peri ventricular and sub cortical white matter T2/flair hyper intensities are identified which do not demonstrate restricted diffusion or mass effect. Findings are non specific and may represent sequela of chronic small vessel ischemic changes. Hippocampal formations demonstrate symmetric volume loss. I do not have diabetes. Do I have dementia or altzheimers

Brief Answer:
Needs detailed higher mental examination.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.

Though,in the setting of ischemic stroke with encephalomalacia and chronic small vessel ischemic changes, vascular dementia is the most likely diagnosis. However, sometimes alzheimer's dementia and vascular dementia can co-exist.So,I suggest you to undergo detailed higher mental functions testing by a neurologist. That will help approach the diagnosis better.

It may so happen sometimes, that diagnosis may remain unsettled even after examination and one may have to go for advanced investigations like nuclear imaging for diagnosis.

If you have any further questions,I shall be glad to have you in follow-up.

Thank you Dr. Panwar, that is the same conclusion we came too after researching the Internet. I know that with vascular dementia my memory will likely diminish faster over a shorter period of time. What is the likelihood that I will suffer another stroke. Or is there anyway to tell based on results of MRI

Brief Answer:
Stroke increase the risk of future strokes.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXX,
Thanks for being in follow-up.

A stroke increases the risk of future strokes. So,one has to be regular on medicines, dietary and other lifestyle changes to prevent stroke, throughout the life. There is no absolute way to predict chances in an individual though.MRI appearance don't help in this.

Hope that I have answered your query. If you have some further questions,I shall be glad to answer else please close the thread, rate it and write a review as your rating will be of help to me.

Answered by Dr. Ajay Panwar (19 hours later)
Brief Answer:
No significant effect on life expectancy.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXX,
Thanks for being in follow-up.

These MRI changes should not have a significant effect on life expectancy.
Strict and regular medicines should be ensured.Lifestyle changes like regular brisk walking or jogging and healthy diet are important.Smoking is one of the most contributing risk factors and should be avoided at any cost(in case it applies).
