What Causes Microscopic Hematuria?

Question: Hello Doctor,

I am from XXXXXXX and live in Europe.
Around 3 years back I was diagnozed with micro hematuria. Doctor referred me to urlogist who performed an ultrasound on me but did not find any root cause of why I was bleeding with urine. I was then advised for cystoscopy test. But I was scared of it like anything and opted out with a hope that it might heal on its own. And, even if it does not, I will not go for cystocopy. I had been doing urine test all this while regulary in my home by using urinalysis test strips which are easily available here. The test for hematuria has always shown positive but it has always been at lowest or second lowest pointer. Lately I decided to take things in my own hand and started with some home remedies like drinking cranberry juice, drinking lot of water and some more. But none worked untill I started drinking half tea spoon baking soda mixed in one cup water. I saw the difference instantly. After drinking baking soda when I tested my urine it showed negative for hematuria on the strip. I drank baking soday for 10 days continuosly 7 times in a day in interval of 2 hours each and my urine did not show positive for hematuria in those 10 days. With a hope that it might have been cured I stopped taking baking soday two days back. The yellow strip did not turn green till yesterday. But today again it turned little green i.e. the lowest positive figure of hematuria as per the test strip. Does that mean that my hematuria is back or it never healed only? Can somebody help as what it can be? when I drink baking soda my hematuria seems to go away but when I stop it it seems to come back? Can I just continue to take baking soda like this and for how long?

Regards

Brief Answer:
You need to investigate the cause for microscopic Hematuria .

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query ,based on the facts that you have posted it appears that your urine analysis has revealed microscopic hematuria .

I shall be happy if you can post me few more details to help me in making comments on your problem.
1) Do you have any other urinary symptoms like burning urination ,frequency for urination ?
2) Have you ever done urine analysis in laboratory?
3) Do you have presence of proteins (Proteinuria) in urine ?

The drip test done at home is just a screening test and is not a substitute for detail urine analysis in a scientific way and has little diagnostic importance as far as diagnosis of underlying renal disease is concerned .

The microscopic hematuria of long duration can be due to Nephropathy which has to be investigated thoroughly .

I would suggest you not to have trial at home and consult qualified Nephrologist for detail investigation to establish diagnosis .

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions , I shall be happy to help you .
Thanks and Regards.

Hi Dr. XXXXXXX

I do not have any other noticiable urinary problem like burning or pain. In night I do feel to go to bathroom few times. But surprisingly, even that has reduced after I started taking baking soda with water. I do see presence of protein in my urine but not every time and it is very low.

I really dont mind a thorough investigation but doctor here are referring me to cystoscopy and I dont want to do that.

Doctor here took my urnine sample and after 10 mintues he told that I have hematuria and referred me to ultra sound and then to cystoscopy. I am not sure if any detailed investigation was done or not. This was around 3 years back.
