Hi, I'm a 32 years old male, i'm a smoker, passing i a high stress period and i have microscopic hematuria (18 by field). Ultrasound showed nothing and cystoscopy showed nothing also. The urologist who did my cystocopy said that i have a very sensitive bladder maybe due to stress. Can stress cause hematuria? and what should i do more?
No just stress cannot cause hematuria. I agree with the assessment done by your urologist, being a smoker it was necessary for a cystoscopy. Stress by itself cannot cause hematuria, but it can predispose to overactive bladder, which may sometimes cause microscopic bleeding. It is not possible to make a diagnosis of overactive bladder with any tests, but only by excluding other causes of hematuria.
Since you have a normal urinary tract on evaluation, I would like to reassure you that you have nothing to worry and this episode will resolve on its own. If you have any symptoms such as increased frequency, urgency to pass urine which is difficult to postpone, it further suggests that you have a sensitive bladder and may need some bladder relaxants if the symptoms are severe and affects your quality of life.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Karthik Rajan
