What Causes Mild Fever While Teething?

Posted on Thu, 8 Oct 2015
Question: My daughter is 2 year and 9 months. From last 3/4 week are are observing that molar teeth are developing. First upper molar teeths developed and now lower molar teeths are developing. She has been keeping temperature in the range of 99-100. We normally give her Tylenol when temperature goes above 100.

Is this normal for a toddler to have persistent body temperature in the range of 99-100 while molar teeth are coming?

She is bit cranky sometimes, but i would assume that normal with tooth development.

Today morning she was having cold and sneezing. With sneezing nosy also comes out. IS this side affect of molar teeth development or we need to give her anti-allergy medicines?

Please advice.

Brief Answer:
The symptoms are probably due to common cold

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through the details provided and understand your concerns. It often happens that due to the habit of pica (the habit of putting anything in the mouth) during teething days that certain infections occur and the child gets a fever; its not due to the teething itself. But if low grade temperature continues, I would insist you to get her blood tested for routine blood counts and C-Reactive protein (CRP) which will indicate if anything other than tylenol needs to be given. Till then you need not worry. It is probably due to a common cold which is also responsible for the sneezing and cold. These are not side effects of teething and giving cetirizine or any other antiallergic for a few days is likely to be helpful.

The crankiness is normal and could be related to the teething.

Hope that helps.

Regards

Hello doctor thanks for your reply. Her cold symptom just stated today.

She has been having low grafe fever fromnpast 2-3 weeks, she is active and playing. We only observed her molar teeths coning out and that why we suspected tooth causing fever

I am planning to observe her for one more week so that her other molar teeth also comes out and after that if fever still persist then definitley i would see doctor, till tht at time i am poanning to giver her t-minic for cold and tylenol if fever goes above 100

Please let me know if my proposed action plan makes sense or if i need to change it

Brief Answer:
The plan of action makes sense

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Usually viral infections that present with cough and cold, resolve in 5-7 days. So, if after another week the fever still persists you should indeed take her to a doctor. Till then give tylenol as and when required and be observant. It makes sense. But in case anything untoward happens or if the child grows lethargic, you might need to take her to the doctor without delay.

Hope for her to get well soon.

Regards
