What Causes Muffled Sounds In Ear While Wearing Hearing Aids?

default
Posted on Mon, 11 May 2015
Question: Hello I currently have just over 60% hearing loss in both ears and wear hearing aids. about 9 years ago I had a prosthetic placed in my right ear where they took out the stapes. Side note I used to box (boxing) up unit 4 years ago. About a 5 days ago out of the blue my right ear changed and now everything sounds like a blown speaker. When I move my head or walk it sounds like a wind tunnel even when chewing food. But the muffled blown speaker sound is when I talk or listen to someone else. It's also very uncomfortable to watch TV and I can not use my right hearing aid as it makes everything worse.

Brief Answer:
Kindly upload latest audiology tests & right ear operation notes here .

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the query.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

As per your clinical history it appears that you are most probably having otosclerosis & stapedectomy done in right ear .

Disturbing sounds in ear are common in this condition . Muffled sound is also common when cold , cough or sneezing present .

To help you better kindly upload latest audiology tests & right ear operation notes here .

If I were your treating Doctor for this case , I would advice you
Steam Inhalation twice daily,
Fexofenadine Tab Allegra at night .

You will get some relief .

Hope it is helpful to you . If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
Regards.

Thank you for your reply. I do not have my recent hearing test and the surgery was done about 9 years ago and I do not have those surgical notes either. But so I'm clear this is somewhat normal for the broken speaker noise to occur? Not something else could be wrong with my ear? So do will this go away, and I will be able to hear clearer out of my right ear?
Also I failed to mention I have nerve damage in my ears and I think maybe otoscolorsis or something like that.
Could this have anything to do with the stapedectomy I had done so long ago, could the prosthetic moved or just not be working anymore? If so would I have to have surgery again?

Brief Answer:
It is less likely because of stapedectomy or moved prosthesis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the follow up query.

Disturbing sounds in ear are common in
1) Progressively increasing otosclerosis
2) If ear nerve damage is increasing &
3) if cold , cough present

In my opinion , it is less likely because of stapedectomy or moved prosthetic .

I would advice , do latest audiology test like pure tone audiometry & Impedance audiometry to know level of hearing , nerve damage in ear .

This disturbing sounds require long term treatment ( 6 weeks to 8 weeks) to go away with medication .

Till the investigation done , use steam Inhalation twice daily &
Fexofenadine Tab Allegra at night .

Regards.
