What Causes Muscle Weakness And Headache Just Before My Period?

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Dec 2014
Question: I have Hashimoto which I'm not sure if matters but every time I am about to ovulate and few days before my period I get severely dehydrated which causes muscle weakness and headache with feeling really weak, and sleepy. I'm suspecting it may have something to do with striven levels which came normal on my blood test. What do you recommend? I drink about 3/4 of gallon of water every day and add xtra sea salt to my diet as my doctor recommend saying I have salt waste syndrome.

Brief Answer:
Endocrine

Detailed Answer:
Sorry to note how you feel.

When I see someone like you in my practice, I tend to order the following after a thorough physical examination:

1 CBC
2 CMP
3 TSH
4 Free T4
5 (25) hydroxy vitamin D
6 Early morning (8 am) serum cortisol

None of these tests require fasting but the timing is important.

These will detect many possible causes of your symptoms. For example, muscle weakness can occur in both vitamin D deficiency and thyroid problems.

Electrolyte disturbances can also do the same and the tests above include these.

If you have a salt wasting condition the blood sodium levels ought to be low. These blood tests will reveal whether or not this is the case.

Cortisol checks for adrenal gland insufficiency which is one of the leading causes of salt wasting syndrome.
