What Causes Muscle Weakness When Suffering From Kidney Failure?

default
Posted on Mon, 12 May 2014
Question: I am a 65 year old woman who started doing peritoneal dialysis 6 months ago. I've been the gamit, from peritonitis to c-dif and am finally settling in with a schedule. I've been doing it manually but will start the circulator this week, been going for instructions. For the last 6 mos. I've had a terrible time with muscle weakness and balance, finding my self lightheaded most of the time. The dr. says he doesn't believe my kidney issues are the problem but still, the timing is just too good. I need to know if I should be looking somewhere else for an answer, if this is nothing to do with kidney failure. It's getting a little dangerous now because I fall frequently and cannot get up alone. I rarely drive anymore and I'm staying home more and more all the time because I don't feel safe. No grocery shopping, going to the mall, nothing. Even the physical therapy advised is not working because I've become a liability at the therapy facility. What could possibly be the matter? I'd appreciate, if not an answer, but at least a direction. Can't let this get any worse. Thank you for your attention and any input you can offer. XXXX

Brief Answer: Followup Detailed Answer: Hello and thanks for the query, I am sorry you are feeling so run down and exhausted. This is certainly both physically and mentally draining. There are a ,ultitude of possible factors which are at play here. First, if your kidneys are failing - dialysis should help to restore your fluid and electrolyte balance. Also, many patients who have kidney issues have problems with anemia. I am sure your doctors are monitoring this as well. As for the weakness this will be difficult to overcome but as long as you remain determined and committed to daily exercise this should improve as you build strength and stamina. Your weight is also critical to monitor - if you gain weight and progressive obesity develops this will only complicate recovery and improvement as it is more and more difficult to move and exercise while carrying extra weight. I am hopeful that significant improvement in wellness will come with the dialysis. Each day strive to make a small bit of progress and in turn this will build you to the point whenre you will be happy with your state of mental and physical health. Sincerely, Dr. Galamaga

Thank for your attention. It is basically the same as my doctors have been telling me but it was still good to have a second opinion. My anemia, blood sugar, and weight are all under control. Haven't gained any weight as I don't have any appetite. I stay pretty much at 130 lbs and am 5'4" tall. Now that the weather is getting nice again, maybe getting outside more and working in my garden will be a great thing. That's what I'm hoping for. Thank you again. XXXX
