What Causes Nausea, Diarrhea Or Loose Stools And Bloating?

default
Posted on Fri, 21 Nov 2014
Question: I sometimes (off and on) have stomach trouble that I can't seem to pin down. I've never been able to get proper sleep at night, and sometimes when I go a while (a week or longer) without getting proper sleep I'll notice that these issues come up.

Usually it will involve me waking up with some sort of nausea, sometimes diarrhea or loose stools, people telling me I look 'pale', and gas or bloating. In the past I've had nasty (egg/sulfur) tasting burps or very bad smelling farting accompanying it, though this time I've noticed that there's stomach pain accompanying it as well.

Notably, this time I have nausea, 'paleness', and the stomach pain (which seems to be around the lower abdomen area in the middle). All of these are much worse this time when I get up and move around. I've seen a doctor about this in the past, but he seemed really rushed and only asked about my symptoms and prodded my abdomen a bit before prescribing me an anti-nausea medication and saying I'm probably just a little queasy and its nothing to worry about. Should I go see a different doctor about this? It seems to crop up about once every 6 months or so.

Brief Answer:
Seems to be IBS

Detailed Answer:
Hello there.
I am Dr.Senduran,General physician hope to answer your query.

The symptoms that you are facing, could possibly be due to improper functioning of the bowel as in IBS..
Your family history of IBS,stress(Sleep deprivation) induced exacerbation of symptoms---strongly suggesting IBS.

Dietary modifications, stress relief would be enough in case of IBS.
1)Avoid foods that trigger the problems(like Fatty meals, gas containing beverages etc)
2)Limit or better to avoid caffeine which can stimulate the bowel and cause diarrhea.
3)Encourage plenty of oral fluids
4)Sleep well daily, get relieved from stress with any of the activity you are interested in..
5)Encourage fruits and vegetables excepting gas forming vegetables like cabbage, beans etc
6)Life style modification like avoid smoking, alcohol if you do.

However it is recommended to get evaluated by a doctor preferably gastroenterologist to confirm the diagnosis by ruling out other rare possible organic causes like subacute intestinal obstruction, mass in the GI tract etc and also to rule out any chronic inflammatory diseases like crohns disease which can also be associated with the symptoms.

Hope this answers your query. If any concern, reply back.Take care.
