What Causes Nausea Post Knee Replacement Surgery?

default
Posted on Thu, 6 Nov 2014
Question: I have had a complete knee replacement 4 weeks ago and had an epidural followed by a morphine drip and SR morphine tablets 4 times daily for 2 weeks, followed by a reducing amount over a week. I am now not taking any morphine, have not for a week. however I have been experiencing continual nausea and have lost a total of 10 kilograms since the operation, most of it since returning home a week ago. Could you please give any encouraging advise? Thank you, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Bland diet

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

First it would be good to find out there isn't something else going on (gall bladder disease for example, or gerd or stress irritation or a simple stomach flu occuring AFTER everything else). Then... nausea treatment such as zofran. Mostly, this would subside in about 1 week after the operation.

And, one can get used to having nausea and expecting it. The anti-nausea medication can still interrupt it (or phenergan .. another anti-nausea medication that works in a different way than zofran). AND, getting unwound from the nausea would involve getting used to eating. Start with a small amount of a bland food (could go with a clear soup or, the banana, rice, applesauce diet) Start with very small amounts every 3-7 minutes and work up gradually.

Regards,
