Posted on Mon, 28 Mar 2016
Question: Last night I experienced an episode I have never had before.I was sitting on the floor and got to feeling nauseous. I leaned my head back to rest on the couch to wait for it to pass and I blacked out. According to my family I was gasping for air, sounded like I was choking and started shaking uncontrollably. They were able to get me to come to and I was so sick afterwards vomiting several times. I was disoriented, weak, confused and my head was all numb and tingly. I did not go to the er but since the episode I have been weak and just not the same. Is it too late to go since its been almost 24 hrs?

Brief Answer:
not late. visit ER

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
What you experienced might be a syncopal attack which happens when there is sudden reduction in blood supply to the brain. There are many causes for this attack to happen.
This could happen due to hypoglycemia or some cardiac entity which will need further investigations.
Few questions I would like to ask.
1. Are you diabetic? If yes are you taking medications for the same? And when did you last check your sugars.
2. Do you have any cardiac history prior to this episode? Did you had palpitations after you regained consiousness?
3. Alongwith nausea do you also have headache?
These questions I am asking so I can get some idea based on your history about what exactly happened. But to exact cause investigations like blood sugar, ECG, if required 2D ECHO and CT BRAIN if at all felt by your doctor. So still advisable to go to ER first thing even now. Meanwhile you could answer my questions so even I can guide you and advice you about what exactly might have happened.
Waiting for your answers.
Thank you

I'm not diabetic, no heart trouble. I do have a headache quite often I would say at some point everyday I have one. I consider myself pretty healthy. My husband said it looked like I was having a seizure. I just had my best friend die a year ago of a stoke which of course concerns me since I had the tingling and my whole body just feels so weak.

Brief Answer:
getting a ct brain will help

Detailed Answer:
Hello, thanks for following up with me.
Yes it could have been a seizure too. Because a person who has seen it can describe it the best.
First of all a seizure occuring without any predisposing reason like fever or electrolyte imbalance or any organic lesion in brain has no significance. As we call it in medical terms if it is unprovoked it holds no significance and only treatment for it is to wait and watch. If there is another episode of seizure then we usually start patient with anti epileptics.
But first for that we need to be sure whether it was really unprovoked one or was there any reason behind it.
For that I would recommend you few tests to be done when you visit ER. 1. CT BRAIN. 2. serum electrolytes. 3. Your fasting and post prandial blood sugars. 4. For your fear of stroke you can get a carotid doppler done just to be sure of the condition of vessels on neck which is common reason for strokes.
Any of the above reasons if found and are correctable then well and good. If not do nothing. Wait and watch. If you get another episode of seizure then you need to consult a doctor and start on antiepileptics to prevent any further episodes.
I hope I have answered your query well.
If you have any more questions kindly write back to me will be happy to answer them.
Thank you
