What Causes Numbness And Swelling On Face?

default
Posted on Tue, 12 Aug 2014
Question: I suffered from stroke about 8 years ago and still recovering from symptoms. I was told my optical nerves were damaged in the process and it would take time to heal. I was also told I had suffered some brain haemorrage and would heal over time. Whenever I watch television for about half an hour, my right eye begins to water and the cheek area begins to swell. I begin to feel numbness around the right side of the face in such situations. In very serious situations I feel swelling of feet as well, then I have to lay down and rest. The same happens with viewing the computer screen. I tried some prescriptions in the past, but they only worsened the situation. Is there a remedy for my facial and watery eyes condition? Thank you for your response.

Brief Answer:
It seems like facial palsy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care magic

I am Dr. Dadapeer K an ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye.

It seems from the history that you had stroke and probably facial nerve was involved resulting in facialpalsy which is recovering slowly.
The complaints of watering from the eyes is because of facial palsy affecting the nerves of the eyelid.
The treatment is by use of multivitamins and physiotherapy.
I require more details like
See whether you can close the eye on the affected side completely
See whether there is any deviation of face
Status of vision in the eyes

Please send me the details so that I can advice you more accurately.

Hope the information is helpful to you.

Thank you

Dear Dr. Dadapeer,

Thank you for your response to my situation. I had to add that I also realized decreased memory recollection. The answers to your questions are as follows:

i) I can close the eye on the affected side completely

ii) There is deviation of the face from time to time especially in times of extreme stress
iii) I am long-sighted (hypermetropia), no cataract, no glaucoma, no contacts, no lenses, I only wear dark shades against bright sunlight.

My previous doctor in Ghana (one Dr. Welbeck) advised that my condition was such that I didn't need to wear contacts but rather to use the prescribed eye drop for life and if not used may result in blindness. When I began using the drops my eyes kept watering and eyelids were almost closing permanently. I had to stop using the drops. My next visit coincided with my travel arrangements to come to the US. I am currently in the US and yet to see a specialist. Thank you for your sustained cooperation in this situation.

Best Regards,

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.
Thank you for the answers.
The presence of deviation of face confirms the presence of facial palsy.
Since the eye on the affected side can close completely, it indicates recovery if facial palsy.
The main treatment in facial palsy is to prevent exposure of eye and dryness. The watering from eyes is probably because of irritation of the eyes. You can use artificial tears eye to prevent reflex watering and irritation of eyes.
Along with this treatment of facial palsy is required by B complex vitamins and physiotherapy.
Do discuss with your specialist regarding the diagnosis and treatment options and do follow up with me.

Hope the information is helpful to you.

Thank you
