What Causes Occasional Pain In Back And Knees When Diagnosed With Arthritis?

Question: Hi, I am male, 68 years old, 170 cm in height and weigh 90 kg. My Overall health is good. Occasionally I suffer from backpain and recently pain in my knees which was diagnosed as mild Arthritis. All in all I believe it's normal for my age. I am a German living in Zambia and there is hardly a specialized doctor for all these ailments. Some two months ago I had a pain when walking under my right foot underneath the heel, which got stronger and stronger over several days. Stepping became unbearable and I started limping (I still work but do not walk too much). Then I could not step any more at all and was not able to walk. The heel area became hard, the entire rear foot got swollen and hot when touching. I got one injection and inflammatory pain relievers. Diagnosis was septic infection. After two weeks everything was almost back to normal and I could walk again. However, the pain when Walking resumed when I stopped the medication. My doctor prescribed then Zerodol - CR 200mg one in a day which I have been taken now for some weeks but it seems it doesn't disappear. I can move my feet in all directions and don't know how Long this can continue. Thanks for your advice, Horst Wendorf

The foot needs to be examined. If there is marked swelling and movement restriction then imaging investigations such as x rays and MRI can be advised based on the presentation. Serum uric acid, ESR and ANA profile can also be done to look for autoimmune causes. Viral Hepatitis and cryoglobulinemia can also result in such peripheral complications. Plantar fasciitis is the most likely diagnosis based on your description. The treatment is rest , anti-inflammatory meds and proper/soft footwear.
