What Causes Outer Thigh Pain?

Question: i am having pain in outer thigh region. Experiences difficulty in climbing stairs and walking for the last one month. I am 73 years old and a regular swimmer. My fitness level is much higher as compared to men of my age.I had been taking physiotherapy for the last two weeks. I feel normal if I take a muscle relaxant or anti inflammatory pill even in very small dose but I dont like taking them. I want to be able to climb stairs and walk as before one month. What should I do?
Brief Answer:
It could be Bone or Nerve problem.

HI
Greetings from Dr.Divakara.P
Thanks for posting your query.
I went through your query and I can understand your concern. If the problem has been for a month then it is not just some muscular spasm for which you can take Muscle relaxants.
I need to know how did the pain started? All of a sudden? Or Gradually?
Did you had any trauma or fall ?
There could be either a trauma to bone or nerve compression at your lower back level. This requires Imaging studies.
Have you been tested with any scan or X ray?
Kindly let me know the details for further discussion.
Regards.

Hi Doctor,
I was having outer thigh pain for quite sometime. Had pain when sleeping on right side. In the last one month only I am experiencing pain while walking and climbing stairs . This has started most probably after I was supervising my house painting works when I had to stand for long hours. I continue swimming with no difficulty. I avoid breast stroke since it involves kicking out the legs.
So far I have not taken any scan or X Ray for this problem.

Brief Answer:
Seems like a Nerve Compression.
Detailed Answer:
HI
Thanks for the information.
As per your information it is unlikely for any bone trauma but the possibility of nerve compression is still there.
I recommend you to get first an X ray of Lumbar Spine and Hip Joint . This will help us in checking for both bone injury and nerve compression. But if the x ray comes out normal you may require MRI Lumbar Spine to check accurately for any Nerve compression.
Kindly get it done and revert back .
