What Causes Over Sleeping After Taking Xanax?

default
Posted on Wed, 3 May 2017
Question: I have been taking 4 mg of xanax per day for the last 3 months. This weekend, I took much more, I think 14 mg. I have never done this before. I slept for 24 hours straight it feels like it is out of my system. My wife and I had a fight and it was my of dealing with the stress.
My regular dosage is 4mg, two bars.
Please give me a wean down schedule (very detailed) to go from 4mg a day to zero. I can take it slow to eliminate most of the nasty withdrawals that accompany most xanax stoppages.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thank you for your direct private question.

Xanax 4mg daily is an enormous amount of Xanax. Xanax 14mg is potentially deadly -- this can decrease your respiratory drive and cause you to stop breathing, resulting in cardiac arrest. Even after sleeping for 24 hours, the amount of Xanax in your system is highly dangerous, and at any time you could enter spontaneous Xanax withdrawal which can cause tremor, hallucinations, coma, cardiac arrest, and death. You need to visit a hospital IMMEDIATELY. Call 911 or have your wife drive you to the nearest emergency room. Your vital signs need to be monitored very closely for the next few days. There is NO SAFE wean-down schedule for you right now -- you are at acute risk of death. Visit an ER immediately.

I will use you for all future dialogues. I will go to the emergency room and get checked out right now. If everything checks out at the ER. On monday can we put together a wean down schedule? So I can get off this poison?

Detailed Answer:
You will likely need inpatient detox. There is no safe way to safely wean down this level of Xanax use -- you will need close inpatient supervision and likely substance abuse rehabilitation afterwards.
