The pain is between and on his rib cage- because it is a tender, "bruised" feeling, the heat / cool did not really work and the Advil brought SOME relief, but, the "bruised" feeling and tender to the touch did not go away. It started suddenly 2 weeks ago and he waited to see if a bruise would actually appear. I hope this helps. Thank you, XXXXX

Brief Answer:
Most probably costochondritis.
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback.
Do you mean the area to be in the center or away from center ?
If the area is between and on his rib cage, the problem can be inflammation of the xiphoid process.
If at the lower rib border, the probable reason can be costochondritis.
In either case the treatment remains almost the same and is as follows:
- Continue Advil at least three times a day after food for next 3 days.
- Rest to the affected area by avoiding any work or movements that causes strain over it.
- Strapping the area helps in many of the cases by limiting the movement and the strain over it.
- In few cases oral steroid can help by its strong anti-inflammatory action, needs a prescription.
- An X-ray of the area, Ultrasound may help to get the probable diagnosis.
- Clinical evaluation, actual physical examination by an Orthopedician/Doctor helps in a proper diagnosis and treatment.
I hope this answer helps your husband, please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
