What Causes Pain At Back Of The Kidney?
Severe pain expected, obstruction to be treated
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX
Thanks for writing in to us.
I have read through your query in detail.
Being a radiologist I see patients with kidney stones everyday. It is important to know the location and size of the stones to give you a detailed answer.
These stones can be of variable size and number. Small stones (less than 5 mm) are usually non obstructive and might pass out on their own. Stones larger than 9 or 10 millimeters rarely pass on their own and generally require a procedure to break up or remove the stone. Some smaller stones also do not pass.
When the stones get stuck in the calyces of the kidney or the ureter, then it causes obstruction to the passage of urine and this leads to severe pain. The pain you are experiencing right now can be due to obstructing stones in the kidney.
If you are having obstruction to the flow of urine in the kidney (hydronephrosis) then you must consult your doctor immediately for further treatment and release of urinary obstruction. This is because urinary obstruction due to a large stone for more than ten days can cause irreversible damage to the kidney.
It might also be that the stone is dislodged and is on its way out of the kidney through a narrow tube called ureter. This can also cause severe pain
You can take non-prescription pain medication until the stone passes. This includes nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen. However the urinary obstruction if any should be treated immediately.
Please continue to drink adequate quantities of water to flush out the kidney stone.
Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.
Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.
Regards,
Dr.Vivek
