What Causes Pain In Calf After Stopping Metronidazole?

default
Posted on Mon, 29 Sep 2014
Question: Hi I've been on metronidazole for nearly 6 weeks and took my last tablet 12 days ago. After being off them for 5 days I started to experience pain in my calf below the knee. This got worse over the last 5 days and as I was on holiday at the time I just though I'd pulled a muscle. I flew home from XXXXXXX Lanka but walked about a lot and pain was still there. Yesterday I saw a nurse at my GP's who did a D Diner test for DVT and it came back as positive for blood clotting. I'm now on anticoagulant injections until Monday when the hospital can do a scan. Today I've started feeling pain in my other leg and a slight pain in my arm. I am wondering if this could be my body getting rid of the metronidazole?? I had a lot of side affects whilst taking it including headache, lose of appetite, confusion, memory lose, nausea to name a few. Have read that metronidazole can cause blood clots so am wondering. I was on the tablets due To having dental surgery including. Extractions, implants, bone grafts, stitches with an infection in the jaw as well. I am airlinecabin crew so use to flying and am always active. I'm 41 yrs old with no medical history in my family of clots.

Brief Answer:
hi and welcome

Detailed Answer:
This is very long use of metronidasole and i am not sure if it was justified. Of course such long use can lead to certain side effects such as gastrointestinal symptoms, headache, skin changes etc. There is no some reported withdrawal syndrome so i dont think that calf pain is related to discontinuation but it could be sign of venous thrombosis which is more common in people who were taking metronidazole.this risk is generally low. Also,in case of dvt, pain would be associated with leg swelling, paleness and skin tension. To rule this out you should do doppler us. wish you good health. Regards
