What Causes Pain In Hip And Severe Hot Flashes

Posted on Fri, 4 Sep 2015
Question: I have pain in my hips when I either sleep, or lay too long on the couch, on one side. Two to three months ago, I purchased a $150 mattress pad that is designed to 'circulate air' and 'keep you cool' (due to severe hot flashes), is about 3" thick and seems to weigh a ton when I try to rotate it. I'm in a king size bed by myself, but still notice a 'dip' in the pad where my butt usually is. A few nights ago, my daughter visited and slept with me (which she always does). We had a few drinks, so I slept extra hard and didn't move much. I woke up with that awful pain in my hip that lasted about four days. I finally iced my hip for about 45 minutes on the 3rd day, which helped. (I have a very good mattress.) But this is a problem I've dealt with for about the last 10 years.

Thanks for your query

I'm Dr Sudhir Kumar

I have gone through your query and understand your concern. It is advisable to take rest, icing and analgesic such as ibuprofen for few days whenever it is painful for relief. You can further get your x ray done to rule out early osteoarthritis and other hip pathology.

You can discuss with your doctor about it.

Hope your query get answered. If you have any clarification then I will be happy to help you.

Wishing you a good health.
Take care.

Dr K,
Thank you for responding, but you didn't offer any suggestions as to specifically what the problem could be. You only told me to do what I had already done. Also, due to damage in my esophagus and stomach caused by NSAID's, I can no longer take them.
I would like to know what you THINK could be causing this pain in my hips.
Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Most likely bursitis. Possiblity of tendinitis and early osteoarthritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome back
There is possibility of trochanteric bursitis. There can be tendinitis. Primary treatment of both is rest and analgesic. Icing is helpful in bursitis. Early osteoarthritis can be there as it is quite common in your age. You need to got x ray done to confirm it. Glucosamine and analgesic are helpful in it.
Everything else already discussed.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
