What Causes Pain In Lower Pelvic Area When I Cough?

default
Posted on Fri, 23 Jan 2015
Question: Had abdominal pain yesterday morning after waking up with a full bladder. When getting up I from sitting at the table I coughed and doubled over in pain in my lower right pelvis/hip. It has been sore ever since, but is improving. I should mention I was lifting heavy boxes the night before and have been coughing a lot due to a cold. Any cause for concern?

Brief Answer:
Better to get checked an ultrasonography.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.

To recapitulate:: 32 / F - lifted heavy boxes the night before - coughing due to cold - Abdominal pain yesterday morning after waking up with the full bladder - coughed and doubles over in pain - right lower pelvis / hip while getting up - sore but improving... Cause of concern ?

With the detailed history you have given, I think there is a cause of concerned as the pain which doubled you over has a reason and it is better to find out now than become late with untoward complications.

The possibilities to be thought of are:
Muscle sprain of the abdominal wall ?
Hernia?
Ovarian cyst or so ?

I would advise to self examine and still better by a Doctor. Getting an ultrasonography of the abdomen and abdominal wall helps in diagnosis and treatment can be planned accordingly.

If the reports and examination is near normal you are certain that nothing serious has happened and then continue to take rest, treatment for cough with cough syrup, steam inhalations, and anti-inflammatory medicines with painkiller properties like Ibuprofen if this suits you - and most important till you get a complete relief.

I hope this answer helps you. Please fell free to ask for more if you need to or if you feel there is a gap-of-communication.

Thank you for your response. The pain is almost gone today, so I was just curious as to what could have caused the pain yesterday or if I had strained something while lifting the day before and just coughed while in a bad position. I don't find I have any lumps that would lead me to think it was a hernia. My last pelvic ultrasound was in September to ensure a previous ovarian cyst had resolved, which it had.

Brief Answer:
Great to know.

Detailed Answer:
Great to know that the pain has almost resolved as was the ovarian cyst as seen in September (almost 4 months ago) on ultrasonography.
If no lumps which protrude on coughing, less likely to be hernia, and per se hernia are very rare to develop in female patients.
The pain might have been due to muscle sprain as per the history provided by you.
Keep an eye on this problem, and opt for the advise I have given.
