Thanks for your query

I'm Dr Sudhir Kumar

I have gone through your query and understand your concern. Your pain while running may be stress fracture as you feel pain in shin and calf. Treatment of it is rest and analgesic such as ibuprofen for few weeks. Avoid running for nearly two weeks. Knee cracklings can be normal without pain. If pain is not there than nothing to worry about. But it is advisable to get your vitamin D test as vitamin D deficiency can be cause of unexplained pain . For detail investigation you can get your MRI of knee.

You can discuss with your doctor about it.

Hope your query get answered. If you have any clarification then I will be happy to help you.

Wishing you a good health.
Take care.

The pain I mentioned about my shin and calf muscles happens only when I run continuously for a kilometer. However, it starts subsiding when I stop running and goes away completely in few minutes. I experience no pain while brisk walking.Could this be related to low strength in calf/shin muscles and might need building strength before taking up running on a regular basis?

As I am planning to run a half marathon in two months, your advice will help me train properly for it without causing any strain to my calf/shin muscles."

Brief Answer:
Gradually increase running distance. Don't overstress.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome back
Your pain can be due to initial stage of stress fracture and partially due to muscle fatigue due to weak muscles. It is advisable to start running upto point of tolerance and stop when pain is likely to start and gradually increase the distance of running on daily basis. Don't overstress the bones and muscles. Second thing should be done to test your vitamin D level as vitamin D is essential for building of strong muscles and bones. If level of vitamin D found low then supplements of vitamin D3 should be taken.
Everything else already discussed.
