Question: I am having pain in my foot and the arch. The top of my foot is mildly swollen. I had fallen on ice while skiing during Christmas and the pain started after that. I have pain on my 5th metatarsal and it radiates to my toes. I was initially told that i had a fracture in midfoot and was given the walking boot. The boot made my leg go numb and I wore it only for 2 weeks. A month later the repeat x-ray showed a growth and I had a MRI done and the report mentioned "Sclerotic lesion base of the fifth metatarsal compatible with a bone island". At times, when the pain is severe the vein on my foot is visible and it becomes grey. My doctor wants me undergo surgery. The earlier xray images are in my profile. I would like to get a second opinion.
Brief Answer:
Surgical removal is right option.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
A bone island is a benign growth of bone or cartilage inside a bone, usually within the marrow. It is a harmless painless benign lesion in most of the cases.
Sometimes, these growths can become cancerous.
Bone scan can help in differentiating bone islands from a more aggressive malignant lesion. A bone island appears as a cold spot on bone scan.
In your case it is symptomatic and is associated with considerable pain and swelling. The treatment for painful lesions is surgery to remove the growth. Your doctor has advised you correctly. This is a minor procedure and removal will help you in having a pain free more productive life.
I hope this answers your query.
