What Causes Pain In The Chest Along With Weight Gain?

Posted on Mon, 23 Mar 2015
Question: Hi,
My name is XXXXXXX Im 26 years old, 5'2'', and about 118 pounds, I have been pretty active my whole life, but been a little bit lazy the past 3 months.. Its been about a month that I dont exercise, or go to the gym.
I have been feeling very fatigued, and eating more than usual. I gained about 8 pounds on the past 3 months.
I have been abusing of fat burners for a long time, and have stopped taking it about 4 months ago. I have been experiencing some symptoms never felt before, as a little bit of pain in the chest, and a " poke " sensation in the left side of chest. It is mostly after meals, or when Im laying at bed before sleep. I feel like someone is poking my heart.
Please, help.
I have gone to the emergency care recently, because of the symptoms mentioned before, and because I take birth control since Im 14 years old (I have to take it because of a condition that I have), and someone warned me that taking birth control, and having chest pain, could be a risk of blood clot, which made me worried. At the emergency room I did an chest X-Ray, CT test, urine test, and also ECG test. It was all normal, and just a scary, but I still have the " poke " sensation here and there... I would say every week 1 or 2 days per week, mostly when Im laying down before go to sleep.

Brief Answer:
Esophagitis is the most likely cause

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

The pain you describe seems to be related to digestive system. Most likely it is esophagitis (inflammation of esophagus), can be also caused by esophageal hernia.
I would advise you to try to avoid spicy food, tomatoes, soda, don't drink liquids with meal and don't lie down after the meal.
If your symptoms don't disappear in a week see a gastroenterologist or your GP.

I would advise you to check your thyroid as well regarding your complaints of being fatigued.

Hope I could help you

Wishing you good health

Thank you Dr. Lilit Baghdasaryan for the reply!

I will take in consideration your reply, and try to schedule a GP appointment.

I just came up with another question and symptom...
I went for a really long hiking today (12 miles), and I got back from it about 4 hours ago, now it is 10:54 pm where I live. I got back home really tired, had a dinner, and went to rest for a bit, but Im feeling a strong "poke" sensation on my heart right now... Would you still thing it could be related to digestive system?
I feel the same pain as If I had accidentally bumped my knee somewhere, and it is sore after, but on my heart...
Im mostly home by myself, so It scares me If there is something that I should concern to happen or not...
