Question: My sister has abdominal pain...for several hours now. It comes in a rhythm. Lower abdomen. Not indigestion.
Brief Answer:
She should be investigated.
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Pain in lower abdomen should be investigated. It can be due to disease of Uterus, Ovaries, Appendix, Ureter, Urinary bladder etc.
Ultrasound abdomen will give a clue.Pelvic inflammatory disease ,Appendicitis, Urinary tract infection, Ureteric stone etc can be made out.
Please consult your doctor, get examined clinically and proceed accordingly.
Hope I answered your query. If you have any questions, I will clarify further.
Wish her good health.
Till investigations,I prefer to give smooth muscle relaxant tablet containing Dicyclomine to my patients with similar complaints.
Regards

Thank you, Doctor. She had endometrial cancer 7 years ago - had a total, complete hysterectomy. (It was caught very early, so no follow-up treatment was necessary. She was released by the cancer clinic in Iowa City 2 years ago.)
She also had her gall bladder removed about 20 years ago. Since then, she's had the typical gastrointestinal problems associated with that. She said that this pain was a bit lower than usual....like gas pain, but lower. (Central area)
The Flexeril seemed to help; she was at least able to go to bed and sleep at 5 am...after being in pain for about 7 hours. She thinks she may have eaten a little too much of something earlier in the day (peanuts) & this is a reaction to that.
If this was a problem with the bladder or ureter, wouldn't she have pain during urination? Because she hasn't reported any to me.

Brief Answer:
It may be due to gastrointestinal problem.
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Pain related to Urinary bladder can be due to infection and inflammation. In Ureteric stone, pain will be in the lower abdomen .There may be or may not be pain during urination.
Pain may be related to gastrointestinal tract. It could be due to adhesions in the lower abdomen at the site of Hysterectomy. If it is due to peanuts, then the pain will be temporary.
If the Ultrasound abdomen is normal, then Diagnostic Laparoscopy is preferable. Any adhesions seen can be released.
Hope I answered your query.
