What Causes Pain In The Shoulder Region?

default
Posted on Tue, 25 Oct 2016
Question: Occasional pain over back of left shoulder, most often noted after a big meal.
No problem with exercise, and ride stationary bike 4-6 times a week for 50-60 minutes a pop, and walk 3-5 miles daily. But strong family history of cardiac issues and feeling a bit paranoid.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

Your symptoms do not seem to be related to any cardiac disorder (including coronary artery disease). You should know that pain related to angina is usually triggered by physical activity (which does not seem to be your case).

The fact that these troubles are more common after a big meal, may indicate possible gastroesophageal reflux as a possible cause.

I recommend taking a PPI (omeprazole, lansoprazole). If your symptoms are relieved by this drugs, the most probable diagnosis would be gastro-esophageal reflux.

Anyway, considering your age and your family history, I would recommend periodically scheduled check ups with your attending physician every 6 months (with resting ECG, chest X ray study and lab blood tests including fasting glucose, complete blood count, blood lipid profile, kidney and liver function tests).

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
