What Causes Painful Sex Along With Bleeding After Hysterectomy?
I'm 43yo. I had a complete hysterectomy almost 15 yrs ago. They removed both ovaries and uterus due to endometriosis, polyps, and cysts on my ovaries. I am unsure about my cervix. It was through my abdominal c-section incision. I have never takes hormones. I have not had sex for 10 yrs.
my boyfriend and I have tried about 6 times in the last 2 months but it was very painful and I bleed. It has gotten better each time in regards to pain and the amount of bleeding especially after deciding to use lubricant. Also we use a condom.
What is causing the bleeding and what can I do to stop from bleeding every time?
Atrophic vaginitis likely.
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
The most likely reason for your symptoms is - atrophic vaginitis.
In this condition, due to removal of the ovaries, there is local deficiency of estrogen in the vaginal tissues.
The vagina becomes, dry, friable, extremely prone to injury and breakage.
This leads to bleeding, spotting and pain while attempting vaginal penetration.
The treatment is local estrogen gels for therapy and good lubrication during sex.
Rarer conditions could be - cervical lesions ( if the cervix or part of it is in situ ) or vaginal polyps, vaginal stenosis etc.
You need to have an internal evaluation by an OB - GYN to confirm the diagnosis and a vault smear ( similar to Pap smear of the cervix done ).
A vaginal ultrasound scan should also be done.
All the best
Please feel free to discuss further.
Also what about if I tried a female condom my friend told me about instead of my boyfriend using a condom. Would that be better? Help with the bleeding maybe?
Wait until the check up.
Detailed Answer:
It is not a good idea to try and insert anything until you have had the check up and you know why you are bleeding.
The female condom is much more cumbersome than a male condom in terms of discomfort, irritation and bleeding.
Also, if you and your boyfriend are both clean, why would you need condoms ???
I know I am clean, I am monogamous, and have abstained from sexual contact of any form in years. He says he is but I have trust issues. Therefore I make him wear a condom to be on the safe side and protect myself. I guess I'm "old school" in that way.
Male condom is better for your purpose.
Detailed Answer:
YOu are not old school.
YOu are just sane, intelligent and cautious, which is nice actually.
But given the issues you are facing, male condom is a better choice.
FEmale condom is more cumbersome when you already have lubrication issues.
Try ultra thin sheer natural feel condoms, there are newer ones available.
