What Causes Persistent Dizziness?
different possible causes
Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic
Dizziness is commonly related to the inner ear though there are other causes as well.
Inner ear causes are: (1) vestibular neuronitis- in this case, the dizziness tends to last for hours at a time. There may be history of a recent illness.Treated briefly with meds to reduce dizziness.
These medications are not used for a long periods because they prevent the body from healing itself.
Meds such as meclizine (antivert), phenergan, metoclopramide, valium, dramamine--- are used temporarily to help with dizziness from any cause
(2)benign paroxysmal positional vertigo- in this case the dizziness last for seconds to minutes and it is worse with certain positions of the head.
This is treated by performing a maneuver called the epley maneuver, the delays and pictures of maneuver are available online
(3)meniere's disease- in this case, it lasts for minutes to hours, associated with hearing loss and abnormal sounds like ringing in the ear. May need treatment with low salt diet and diuretic medications
Other causes are: related to brain stem injury, dehydration, migraines, orthostatic hypotension (blood pressure falls on standing).
Treatment: (1)it may be best for her to be examined to determine the exact cause
(2)the medications mentioned above can be used for a few days to help reduce the symptoms
I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
