What Causes Persistent Headache And Ear Congestion?

default
Posted on Tue, 8 Nov 2016
Question: My husband is suffering from headaches. Sometimes his ears bother him as well. Nothing seems to be relieving his discomfort. His doctor believes it is sinus related, but nothing we have done till now (flonase, nasal saline rinse) appears to lessen the pain and discomfort.

Brief Answer:
Information about sinus problems

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

Persistent headaches should be evaluated with a head CT or MRI study. I understand that there is the possibility that it might be related to his sinus problem, but other possibilities need to be ruled out if this has been going on for more than a month.

If he has sinus related allergies, consider making the bedroom a hypoallergenic space with no pets; and use dust mite covers on the pillows, mattress, and box spring.

Wash bedding in hot water and avoid using detergents that have fragrance. And no laundry dryer sheets (fabric softener/antistatic) as the chemicals on it can bother sensitive people without their knowing it. Avoid perfumes and scented products in general and avoid tobacco smoke as these are irritants. If there are any mold problems in the house, get those addressed.

I see that he uses saline rinse and Flonase and I just want to comment that sometimes people use both at the same time and then the Flonase ends up dripping down into the stomach instead of staying in the sinuses. So don't use them within 30-60 minutes of each other.

Dust and vacuum regularly (weekly) if you don't already.

If the Flonase helps a little with using it once a day, consider using it twice a day. Some people get a better response with twice a day use. But don't use it more than twice a day.

I hope this information helps. But do consider following up with an ENT and getting imaging studies done if there is any chance that the headaches are not entirely from sinus problems.
