What Causes Rectal Bleeding While On Laxatives?
Question: I have been taking laxatives for 19 years, and last year, I began having internal bleeding during a stressful period in my life. I ended up with a blood transfusion. They tested me for colon cancer, but the test was negative. Recently the bleeding started again. Can the laxatives be responsible for this?
Brief Answer:
Laxative is not likely to be responsible...
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
No, laxatives does not cause such heavy bleeding. If you been suffering with internal hemorrhoids it may bleed with stools especially when you have to strain hard.
Can you list the test that were done to rule out colon cancer? Did it include a per rectal examination and proctoscopy?
The other most likely causes of per rectal bleeding are intestinal polyps and inflammatory colitis / bowel disease. Your doctor should have had these ruled out too while testing for colon cancer.
Hope this answered your question.
