What Causes Recurrent Hand, Foot And Mouth Disease?
Question: Can hand-foot-and-mouth disease be gotten more than once?
Brief Answer:
Explained below...
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I understand your concern.
Hand, foot and mouth disease is caused by a virus called Coxsackie. There are 2 main groups of this virus:
- A that infect the skin and mucous membranes(like hand, foot, and mouth disease)
- B tend to infect internal organs like heart, pleura, etc.
Infection can occur several times during the life with rash , fever , etc but most of the time is asymptomatic.
This is because, although specific immunity can occur, however, as there are different strains of virus, the patient can be reinfected but with different strain.
Hope this answers to your query.
