CBC normal. "RBC are really big". CT of abdomen apparently normal. They are now proceeding with bone marrow eval. What possible causes?
Brief Answer:
In this case it may be revealed after bone marrow evaluation
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to HealthcareMagic and thanks for trusting us for your health related queries.
Decrease in RBCs is coined as anemia.
As explained above, there're various causes of anemia, starting from simple malnutrition to bleeding. Normal CBC reports helps us to rule out that causes may not be related to hematological issues.
Bone marrow is the site or you can say its the factory where blood cells are produced. So, for anemia evaluation, either there should be problem at factory production or at usage level.
Normal report of CBC implies that no problem at usage level.
RBCs are big in size indicate there might be some problem at the production site, hence your treating doctor has advised to get bone marrow biopsy.
Spleen is an abdominal organ where the used and old RBCs are destroyed. That is the function of spleen. When spleen starts its exaggerated function then sometimes even the normal RBCs are also destroyed leading to anemia. CT abdomen normal helps to get an idea that spleen's functional capacity isn't exaggerated.
Advice:
1. Please be patient and don't worry
2. Proceed with the bone marrow biopsy.
I hope this information was helpful and useful .
Feel free to ask any further queries.
