What Causes Recurring Itching Sensation On Scrotum?

default
Posted on Fri, 13 Mar 2015
Question: I have had an itchy scrotum for the past year that flares up mainly at night time in my bed. If I scratch at all the whole thing goes into overdrive. I went to a doctor a year ago and he prescribed clobetasol cream. I still continue to use it on occasions (not regularly) and only when the symptoms are difficult to deal with. What is this cream supposed to be treating? - the doctor didn't tell me. Can I expect these symptoms to go away in time? Is there anything practical I can do to prevent this?

Brief Answer:
Fungal infection

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for contacting HCM with your health care concerns. You have been bothered by testicular itching on and off for years. This itching and possible redness of the scrotum or inguinal area is likely due to a fungal infection. Fungus is an opportunistic infection that grows in places that are dark, warm and moist which describes the scrotal area very well. Your doctor decided to use the clobetasol to control the itching from the fungal infection. I would recommend that in addition to using the clobetasol for the itching that you also add tinactin or Lamisil powder to reduce the fungus.

In summary
1. clobetasol to reduce itching only
2. Add tinactin or Lamisil for possible fungal infection
