Posted on Mon, 6 Apr 2015
Question: Yesterday while I was having a bowel movement I experienced severe abdominal pain on the right side. It felt like something was tearing me apart. It eased up after several severe cramps or spasms. my side still hurts and I feel stabbing pain when I sneeze or cough. Will this pain ease?

Brief Answer:
Possibly muscular-skeletal issues (muscle tear) if straining passing motion

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I am sorry for the situation you are in.

Before running into final conclusions, I need to know:
- have you experienced problems during your bowel movements (constipation? diarrhea? )
- do you feel gas? nausea? vomiting?
- any flu like symptom?
- any frequent urination? burning? or other symptoms?

The abdominal pain you felt on the right side might be due to muscular skeletal issue (tearing) especially if you pushed too hard/straining too hard during bowel movement and the fecal mass was very hard.

You can take OTC pain-killer to subside the pain (e.g. ibuprofen, mephenamic acid or acetaminophen). If the pain won't subside and will persist, further evaluation by GI specialist is advised together with running of further tests including abdominal ultrasound.

Wish fast recovery!
