What Causes Ringing Sounds In Ear And Dizziness?

default
Posted on Thu, 25 Sep 2014
Question: Since a week ago, there has been a ringing sound in my ear often increasing and decreasing. It is quite loud often and annoying. I had also experiencing dizziness like the Earth is moving under me. The dizziness has gone after the ENT I visited prescribed "Stugeron". The first day, he cleaned out my ear and the sound didn't go. He told me to take an audiometry test.

In the audio metry test, thy said that my hearing was alright but in one case the sound they played was the same as the one in my ear so I wasn't able to distinguish it. The provisional diagnosis was "Bilateral hearing sensitivity within normal limits with an 8 khz dip for right ear"

The doctor after that said that there probably is some nerve weakening and prescribed Nervigen and complamina retard for a month and told me to visit after a month.

Do you think I should visit a different ENT or continue with this prescription ?

I would like to add a few more facts :-
1.I have been taking homeopathic medicine for about a month (for pimples).
2. I have gone swimming, to the gym and was using headphones more than usual the week before it happens
3.The sound increases/is more of a disturbance when people speak into my affected ear
4. I have felt a lot tired in the past week suddenly and a drastic loss of stamina while I was playing football

Brief Answer:
Noise induced trauma.

Detailed Answer:
HI sir
I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

You seem to have Noise induced trauma from the sustained use of ear phones.
This is evident from your audiogram as a dip at 8khz.

High frequencies from ear phones have damaged your nerve and sound conduction ability of your cochlea.

This has manifested in the form of fluctuating tinnitis and sensation of dizziness and weakness.
This is one kind of auditory fatigue shown by your ear in response to noise damage.

I strongly recommend you not to use these ear phones for 6 months or more from here on.

Most of these changes are reversible with time.

There is no need to visit another ENT surgeon.

You can get along with the prescribed medicines from your doctor.

Homeopathic drugs have no correlation to your present problem.

Avoid swimming for few weeks.

Repeat Audiometry after 3 months.

I hope this info is helpful to you.
Thank you

Actually, during the audiometry, at a point, the sound they played was the same as the sound in the ear, so I couldn't clearly differentiate between the two sounds. I told this to the operator and at the end , she told me that the 8 khz was only because the two sounds were similar to me

Also, this is only in my right ear and i haven't felt much pain in it. However, since 2/3 days ago, I have experienced occasional pain in the other ear(left one), especially when I cup my hand over the left ear(create vacuum) and remove it, I feel it intently.

Brief Answer:
Noise induced hearing loss in Right ear.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXX,

I have carefully gone through your audiogram report.

I would like to clarify the following to you.

1.Your left ear is absolutely normal in terms of all hearing parameters.

2.Your pure tone average -PTA values are absolutely normal in both ears.
They are well within the speech reception threshold.

3.The right ear is not completely normal.

It has upto 30db loss at higher frequencies ie at 8000hz.

Normal speech reception thresholds are in the range of 0-25db from 250hz -6000hz.

This in your case was normal upto 7000 hz .
Hence based on this result you termed to have as bilateral(meaning both ears) normal hearing sensitivity.

But in reality you seem to have a dip corresponding to 8000hz on horizontal line and 50db on vertical line.

This corresponds to 30db loss of hearing(50-20=30).

Hence in reality you seem to have "noise induced hearing loss -Right ear" at high frequency .

Hence your audiologist impression is only partially correct.

I hope this info is helpful to you,
Thank you
