What Causes Round Nodule Above Left Nipple?

default
Posted on Mon, 17 Nov 2014
Question: Hi ! I went to the doc today because I have a very tiny perfectly round nodule above my left nipple. The area gets sore around 4 days before period and soreness around the nodule goes away about 3 days after period. Not sure if nodule stays. My doc today said it was XXXXXXX but to me it doesn't seem XXXXXXX She couldn't feel it laying down , but felt it sitting up. Very tiny. Smaller than a pea I'd say. Going in for mammogram next week. She thought it seemed like a cyst. Any insight on this?

Brief Answer:
Fibrocystic breast disease

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for contacting HCM with your medical concerns and questions.

From you description this is classic fibrocystic breast disease. Young women will notice painful lumps that can come and go with their cycles due to hormonal changes. There are both cysts and small pea size fibrous tissue. This is a completely benign problem but can be painful.

For my patients who have fibrocystic breast disease I recommend for them:
1. wear a good tight fitting bra
2. reduce caffeinated beverages as this may cause more pain and discomfort
3. Non-steroidal analgesics like ibuprofen or Naprosyn will also help

I agree with your doctor to proceed with the mammogram but be reassured the most likely cause for your breast lumps is fibrocystic breasts
