What Causes Rushing Sound In Ear?

default
Posted on Wed, 14 Sep 2016
Question: I thought i had perforated my ear drum boxing 1 week ago. ENT specialist says he can see no perforation but when i hold my nose and blow i can literally hear air rushing out of my ear.

I am going on holiday this week so i need to know! What is the rushing sound? Can i snorkel and dive on holiday?

I have minimal pain and my hearing is fine.

Brief Answer:
Impedance Audiometry.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Get an Impedance Audiometry (Tympanometry) done.

2. The sound of rushing air is normally the air flowing through the Eustachian Tube which connects the middle ear to the nose.

3. If there is a tiny perforation that was not visible, it will show up on the Impedance Audiometry ( Tympanometry ).

4. If the Impedance Audiometry / Tympanometry is normal you can go underwater , otherwise avoid water sports. Also get a PTA ( Pure Tone Audiometry ) done.

5. Also rely on any symptoms while under water. If you feel it is a problem, avoid.

6. Traumatic perforations, if present, mostly heal on their own in a few weeks. The ear must be kept dry and free of infection.

7. Upload these test results.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
