What Causes Seizures And Coughing Up Of Blood After A Stroke?

Question: my mother in law has had a major stroke in the past and has XXXXXXX strokes. shes been having seizures and this morning was coughing up blood. is this serious?

Brief Answer: Yes,she need to consult doctor. Detailed Answer: Hello XXXX Thanks for writing to HCM Yes,coughing up blood should be taken seriously and she need to consult doctor. She need proper clinical examination and investigations. There may be many reasons for coughing up blood. It may be due to injury in oral cavity due to seizures,pulmonary causes or gastrointestinal causes. It is important to know about history of last episode of seizure,history of cough etc. There are chances of injury in oral cavity during seizure so she need examination of oral cavity. Investigations like routine hemogram,RBS,LFT,RFT,Lipid profile,Ultrasound of abdomen,Chest X-ray (PA view)should be done.Further investigations can be done if needed. Proper treatment depend upon clinical findings and investigation reports. Besides this she need close watch for her Blood pressure and Lipid profile as these are the contributing factors for stroke.
