What Causes Severe Body Aches, Fatigue, Nausea And Sore Throat?
Question: I have had 7 days with SEVERE body aches, terrible exhaustion, and tender glands. I also have mild nausea and sore throat. I went to urgent care where they told me it's probably viral, see you later. I'm very worried because I can't live my life like this, and I can't miss work indefinitely. I understand the antibiotics can't help with a viral infection, but the "It'll go away sometime" answer doesn't help me after a week. If I'm not better in the next week or so, my life is going to unravel. What can I do? Thank you.
Brief Answer:
Hello. I understand your concern here
Detailed Answer:
Assuming this isn't a bacterial pharyngitis, while it may be the flu, it sounds to me like mononucleosis and, unfortunately, there is no specific medication for that and one has to ride it out. That might take several weeks.
Another possibility would be Lyme disease and I would screen you for both that and mono.
If it were Lyme, three weeks of doxycycline usually treats it effectively.
You need either to go back to the urgent care or see a different doctor
Please let me know if you need any more information here

Is mono contagious? If today is day 7, do I have any likelihood of being better in another week?
Brief Answer:
Hi again
Detailed Answer:
Usually mono is contagious for a month after the symptoms start, but it's transmitted through kissing and close contact with others and not by just being in the same room.
If this is only the flu you should be better in a week's time

Sorry to bother you again. Last night I went to sleep with layers on, woke up this morning sweating and feeling a lot better. That did not last, and it got worse than ever. Took a nap today the same way with the same result, and back to feeling terrible again. Is that a sign of improvement?
Brief Answer:
Hi again
Detailed Answer:
That makes it sound more like the flu rather than mono. Overall it does sound like you're on the way to getting better--maybe in another few days

Can it be flu with no fever and a regular appetite?
Every time I sleep AND sweat, I feel better when I wake up for a while, then right back to miserable. Does that make any sense?
Brief Answer:
Hi again
Detailed Answer:
Yes--that is what's known as the fever breaking. When the fever returns, we all feel lousy. This is sounding more and more like the flu.

Does that idea pertain even though I have not had any fever? And thank you for being patient with my many questions.
Brief Answer:
Hello
Detailed Answer:
Even if you don't think there's a fever, the sweats are indicative of one.
