Question: I suffer from very heavy periods and have to take iron tablets long term.My last blood test showed feritten levels 32 whiich is good for me. I have booked flights to la in 2 months and the flight lasts 11 hrs 30 mins.I flew to the us 5 yrs ago on a 6 hr 30 min flight.During the last 30 mins of the flight i began to feel very unwell .I felt extremely cold and as thogh the blood wasnt moving round my body and thought i wad going to pass out . Then the plane stertrd to descend and i returned to normal. I have only just found out this would have been due to my anaemia as i wasnt on iron at the time.I am now scared to fly to la and want to know if i should take extra oxygen and if i do does that guarantee my safety. Would it be safer to change my travel route and fly on one 8hr flight to NYC then a second 6 hr flight to la 2 days later ? then do the same on the way back .I believe my iron levels are technically safe for flying but do not know my hemoglobn levelsand still get headaches fatigue and leg pains.I am worried it may not be safe to fly on any flight over a few hrs.Can you advise

Brief Answer:
Better to treat your menstrual abnormality first.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
In my opinion, you should first treat the cause. And the cause in your case is heavy menstrual bleeding.
At your age it is mostly due to menopausal hormonal imbalance.
So better to first get done hormone levels and if they are imbalanced then start hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
No need to split the flight.
If it is anemia only then oxygen supplementation will definitely help.
Please let me know
1. Have you ever undergone hormone levels?
2. Are you having stress and anxiety?
Please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you better. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

I have been seen by gynacologist and had my hormone levels tested though not recently. However my flight is in 8 weeks so my main concern is whether my hemoglobin levels are safe for me to fly and whether ill require oxygen and if i do need it will it help immediately.I have suffered mennoragea for many years and just have to take iron

Oxygen will definitely help it immediately because low hemoglobin cause all symptoms because of lack of oxygen in the body.
So additional oxygen from outside will definitely help immediately.
