Posted on Tue, 22 Mar 2016
Question: My husband was just diagnosed with very mild IPF. The worse symptom is the horrible cough that can cause gagging and feeling like he is going to pass out . The cough completely goes away when he lays down so he sleeps well . He is being treated for Gerd . He has no post nasal drip. Do you know why the cough ceases at night and is there anything he can take to help the cough. He has tried prednisone but it did not seem to help

Brief Answer:
He can try antihistamine drug.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Honestly speaking, there is no specific cause for cough in setting or standing position.
He is not having cough in lying down position. This is quite uncommon.
I am not finding any specific cause for this.
But better to consult ENT doctor and get done endoscopic examination of larynx to rule out internal pathology.
For coughing, better to give him antihistamine drug.. Please let me know
1. Does he have expectoration?
2. Since how many days he is suffering from this?
Please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you better.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wishing good health to your husband. Thanks.
