What Causes Severe Diarrhea?
Question: I have had diahrea (sp?) for three weeks. Six - seven episodes per day on most days. I started taking NSAID in May and wonder if this is a side effect?

It is first of all important to exclude the main causes of acute severe diarrhea before attributing this to NSAIDS. It is of course very true that NSAIDS have been described in many cases to be associated or to be a risk factor to develop acute diarrhea.
Food intoxication, changes in diet to start eating foods you were not used to and some gastrointestinal infections must be checked for and excluded first. It is only after this that the diarrhea could be linked to NSAIDS.
It is imperative to know if this is the first time you are taking NSAIDS, or a new NSAID or not, for this might be specific to a particular drug.
NSAID intake has been described to be a risk factor to developing diarrhea in some persons. However, other major causes of acute diarrhea like infections, food intoxication and food intolerance must be excluded first.
