What Causes Severe Headache, Dizziness And Nausea With High Platelet Count?

Posted on Thu, 4 Jun 2015
Question: I have had a severe headache for 5 days now, with dizziness and nausea spells that make me feel like I'm going to pass out. This has has been off and on but my headache will not go away. It's constant. Yesterday I went to the dr and had labs done. My platelet count said 415 high and my mpv said 6.2 Low? Does this mean anything?

Brief Answer:
Yes ma'am, it does make sense; let me explain

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. A high platelet count is called thrombocytosis and has the following symptoms:

+Headache
+Chest pain
+Weakness
+Dizziness
+Tingling or numbness, especially on peripheries
+Fainting or loss of consciousness at times
and a few others.

So, as you can see from above the headaches itself could be due to the high platelet count. Let me also list some of the more common causes for thrombocytosis for your reference ma'am:

+Excessive exercise
+Bleeding
+Allergic reactions
+Surgery
+Trauma
+Side effect of a few medications
+Inflammation
+Kidney related abnormalities
+Cancer (rare)
and a few others.

I hope you find my response both helpful and informative. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help.

Best wishes.

My docot had a nurse call me and say my labs cane back all normal so I asked about the platelets showing high and the mpv showing low and she stumbled her way through a crap answer of she doesnt know but the dr said everything was normal... Is there anything i should do or can do or should i see a different dr or do these numbers mean nothing? It sounds like from what you sent me that they do mean something with ny symptoms..

Brief Answer:
Always here for you ma'am

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again ma'am.

Of course they do mean something. Unless your doctor is sure that this is something harmless, the most likely causes here could be a specific type of anaemia, heparin side effect, genetic or autoimmune disorders, recent viral infections, a few sexually transmitted infections, etc.

I would recommend you either take this up with your doctor who should be more responsible or at least discuss with you what he thinks it is and why he is so laid back about it, or schedule an appointment with another doctor.

For any guidance, I want you to know that I am always here ma'am.

Best wishes.
