What Causes Severe Lower Back Pain After Long Periods Of Standing?

Posted on Mon, 23 Nov 2015
Question: My son is 34 years old. He has recently started having lower back pains in the center and right side. It also moves around to his side and he said sometimes feels like it is in his gut. It gets worse the longer he stands during the day. Sometimes he feels nauseous and has to vomit. Also can have a headache. He hasn't had a bowel movement for 5 days. Doctors did a blood test and said it shows inflamation and that it must be a strained muscle. He also had an MRI on his lower back and it shows nothing. He also had some kind of rash on his lower back that doctor said was a skin infection and they gave him antibiotics for that and it is going away. He can wake up in the moring and feel okay and as the day goes on it comes back. Any idea where he should go from here?

Brief Answer:
it seems to be a muscular pain.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing your query.
After reading your post, it seems that he is having his symptoms due to muscular pain.
I would advise that he should take a painkiller like Ibuprofen twice daily after meals along with a muscle relaxant like Thiocolchicoside. An antacid like Omeprazole 40mg once a day before meals should also be taken. Hot fomentation and application of pain relieving gel locally will have added benefits. He should also go for physiotherapy after discussing with his Orthopedician.
Avoid long standing and bending postures.
A clinical examination by an Orthopedic surgeon will help in planning further medical management.
I hope this is helpful to you. If you have any further query, I will be happy to help.
Regards. Thanks.

Why would he be nauseous at times and have no bowel movements? This is related to muscular pain?

Brief Answer:
pain can cause nausea.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your response.

Severe pain of any origin can cause nausea.

Muscular pain is a probability according to the symptoms like increase in pain after long standing. Although muscle pain will not cause decrease in bowel movement directly. An Orthopedic opinion is needed for further planning of medical management.

I hope this answers your query. If you have any further doubts, please mention.
Regards. Thanks.
