Question: I have what the ortho doctor called a cervical sprain of the neck. I have severe pain in the back of my neck, all over the left side of my scull, and now it seems to have also moved down under my breasts around under my arms and all the way around my back. It hurts when I breathe. is this probably what the ortho doctor called it because I'm afraid it something more.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for asking.

I can understand your concern. The cervical sprain might have caused pain in chest muscles due to continued posture maintenance. It means due to cervical sprain you must be maintaining some posture to avoid neck pain. This can cause muscle fatigue on left side chest muscle which is causing pain, worsening on inspiration. It can be suspected more if pain is localised, no fever, no cough, no redness or warm skin.

Its treatment is
: Rest
: Apply painkiller gel at pain site
: Take painkiller like Diclofenac sodium after proper prescription.
: Apply icepacks at pain site.
: Avoid pressure at pain area. Limit movement.
: Consult physiotherapist after some relief.

Another possibilities could be

: Chest infection like Pneumonia/Pneumonitis - It can be suspected if fever, cough, sharp chest pain, breathing difficulty.

It can be confirmed by Chest X ray and chest examination by physician. It must be ruled out due to your age. Treatment is
: Steam inhalation
: Antibiotic course like Coamoxyclav therapy. Mostly injectables are given.
: Inhalers in case of respiratory problems like salbutamol/terbutaline.

: Another possibility is rib injury - It can be suspected if recent history of chest injury, hearing some crack sound, severe pain at injury site, breathing difficulty.

It can be confirmed by Chest X ray. Treatment is similar to muscle injury or sprain. Bed rest is prolonged in it. No need of surgery.

SO do not worry. Also it cannot be breast pain as such pain does not increase with respiration.

Hope it will help you. Still in doubt, do let me know. Thanks. Take care.
