default
Posted on Wed, 14 Jun 2017
Question: My son (age 11) plays hockey and woke Sat with severe pain in his R achilles (his assessment) tendon. He also c/o pain in his R wrist. By Sunday morning he c/o severe pain in his L wrist as well and last night woke w pain in his L achilles. He is getting relief from Advil 400mg. He didn't seem sensitive to touch as he tolerated massage to all areas with no recoil. He was able to play after the Advil (tournament and he was the only goalie). He has been playing goalie for 8 months as well as player for 4 years, and is in very good physical shape. He had influenza B (confirmed by nasal swab) four weeks ago. The tournament was challenging and he saw 30-38 shots in each of the 4 games played. Should I wait to see if this resolves, or does he need to see someone? If so, who? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Should resolve

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mrs XXXX,

Thank you for posting the question.
I have gone through the medical history in detail.

From the symptoms it seems that your son might be overdoing the physical exertion.

If the muscles are weak or if he has underlying calcium or vitamin D deficiency, then he may get these kind of transient episodes of soft tissue inflammations anywhere in the body.

These usually resolve spontaneously after taking adequate rest and medicines.

But i would still suggest you to get his Serum calcium and vitamin D levels in blood checked.

If any deficiency is diagnosed, you can consult an orthopedician and start on appropriate supplements.

There is nothing much to worry about and he should be fine in coming few days.

I hope the answer was useful.

Feel free to ask me any follow up queries that you may have.

Thank you.
Kind regards.

Dear Dr. XXXXXXX

Thank you for your evaluation. My son's ankle and R wrist have improved but his L wrist has continued hurting and is now mildly swollen. It is not hot or warm to touch and he is afebrile. Any further advice?

Sincerely,

XXXX

Brief Answer:
Anti inflammtory tablets

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

It is good to her that his ankle and right wrist have improved.

For his left wrist,i would suggest anti inflammatory tablets for 3 days with a compression bandage and ice packs.

He should improve with this.

Thank you.
