What Causes Severe Pain In The Bones After Arthroscopy Of The Knee?
Question: I had arthroscopy on my knee a week ago for a defect on the medial femoral condyle/necrosis and loose bodies. I was feeling ok and bearing some weight but yesterday something changed. I began having more pain/grinding and sometimes it locks up and I can't extend my knee all the way unless I manipulate it a little bit. It really hurts when I try to extend it. It feels like how I felt before I got surgery. I went to physical therapy today and she said it was just because I had swelling and the fluid shifting can cause that sensation. But it really feels like something is catching in my knee. I am afraid another piece broke off. It mostly happens after I have had my knee bent and try to straighten it out. What do you think could be causing this? Also for the past 2 months or so I have been having this deep aching bone pain. It seems to be the worst at night. It is mostly in my upper legs/knees and upper arms/elbows. I take nsaids and use ice which helps but it won't go away. And no doctor can seem to give me a cause for this.

A sudden increase in pain/ grinding or locking is worrisome. Since your arthroscopy and loose body removal was done just a week ago another necrosed body in the joint just in a week is very unlikely. These symptoms suggest an increase in inflammation in the area. This can happen due to excessive stress. You can avoid physical exercise for a few days and give your knee a rest and hot compress and see if it improves. in case the problem persists then do consult your orthopedician for an examination. An MRI scan will help in finding out any other problem that might have happened. The pain in the bones all over can be related to low levels of calcium and vitamin D3. Do get the levels checked and start with proper supplements.
